This one is kind of an obscure one, but with Ravnica seeing a heightened return for Angels, and Dominaria giving us the Angel Lord Lyra, I thought It could be considered kind of appropriate (any excuse).
Next to Faeries, Angels are one of my favourite creature tribes. So I thought with all this in mind I would give you a little treat of my top 10 Angels in MTG. Regardless of Mana, colour, these are just cool. I’d love to hear if you guys have any favourites I didn’t mention!
Without further ado;
Brisela, Voice of Nightmares
An OBVIOUS choice for my list. Yes, it is technically two cards to begin with (but this way I could have another 9 on my list) This is an insane meld from two reasonable cards, Gisela is particularly cool, a 4/3 at 4 Mana with first strike and lifelink is a bit of a joke. Unfortunately, her only downside with constructed formats is her weakness to Bolt. Bruna is a good Angel/Human commander card, and of course getting them to meld is end game. Spells under 3 CMC is a brutal effect and covers most removal spells that would be able to deal with her. The only reason she fell in at number 10 was the high mana cost on Bruna, causing an awkwardness for actually getting them melded.
Tariel, Reckoner of Souls
Another particularly fun one, Tariel is a cool combination of colours (making for an interesting commander option) and has a strange ability. Also having vigilance means she can attack and activate her ability on the same turn! Of course, I would expect this from a 7 mana card.
WHY ISN’T THIS LEGENDARY?! I honestly had my heart set on this for a 5 colour commander ages ago, then halfway through the brewing, I was like wait?! IT’S NOT EVEN LEGENDARY ??? Sure my obliviousness is probably more to blame, but it just looks so legendary, you know? Either way, it still made it into my top ten because it’s still super fun, (could’ve got a higher score if it was legendary tho wizards just saying.) Huh, how many times can you type legendary in a paragraph before it’s weird?
An obvious choice really, an angel that sees Modern play, and is just kinda stupid, as all the best cards are.
An EXCELLENT new addition to the magic world. Probably the card that set my motions to get back into standard, and with the new Angels in Ravnica, I’m super excited. We’ve been desperate for an Angel Lord forever!! Or ok.. I have.
I just love this card, I’m not even sure why. I’d have it in every Commander deck I own if I actually had like 5 copies.. which I don’t (Donations are accepted) But seriously Landfall is a super good mechanic, and ‘nonland permanent’, and if it’s a plains ‘to the battlefield’ ?!?! I mean come on guys! It was one of the first cards I bought for my Angel Tribal Commander.
Linvala, Keeper of Silence
I have to admit although her ability doesn’t have the exciting ‘woo’ factor of returning cards to the battlefield or not losing the game, she had to be in because she’s such a GOOD card. Modern playable, great sideboard card, and a 3/4 flyer which misses Bolt.
Chancellor of the Annex
This has to be one of my favourite Angels (obviously that’s what this list is) Basically I’m a Magic troll who loves making games hard for people to play, not necessarily so I win, just hard for them to win… Don’t hate me. This is the perfect card for this. We recently playtested her in a Modern Angel deck and she worked a charm! To my surprise, I’ll be honest.
Iona, Sheild of Emeria
One of the best Angels ever printed (Or second best, to be precise) There have been some Modern decks built to get her out, and Commander is a joke if anyone has her. Ah, what a nice Mono-Blue Commander you have there; although that’s super mean isn’t it? Oh well.
Avacyn, Angel of Hope
TADA, my Idol Avacyn. All time favourite character and card. I ask if she can go in EVERY deck I make, to which Arran tells me no she’s too expensive 😦 But I’ll never stop trying!!! I swap her between all my Commanders, and she has won me many a game. I did play her in Modern a few times and she won me some games there too. She’s just, beautiful I guess. I love her. (We’ll just ignore her vulnerability to Path, shhhhh. Path hits bloody everything so It doesn’t count.
