Gisa and Geralf Commander Deck-Tech

Daniel Grundy | 7th January 2019

Zombies! As zombies were my first proper standard deck and my first casual deck when i first started playing, i had to try and make a zombie commander deck. As for the Commander itself there really isn’t much going on. The ability to start filling your graveyard for later down the line on ETB and a once per turn resurrection isn’t really anything broken. But really i only use Gisa and Geralf for the colours and to make it more themed.

So the decks main way of winning is to try and conjure an army of zombies to overwhelm your opponent. There are a number of mass resurrection spells as well as a few spells/abilities to bring a single creature back at a time so the deck doesn’t really mind our creatures constantly getting blown up throughout the early game as we can shine more in the late game with things like Rise of the Dark Realms. Things like Windfall and Whispering Madness are good to fill up the graveyard early on as well as disrupting everyone else’s game plan by discarding their hands.

As for making our wide army of zombies enough to run down your opponents the deck runs a fair number of anthem effects like Bad moon, Vanquishers Banner and Coat of Arms. Some of the creatures themselves also help out like Lord of the Acursed and Diregraf Captain.

As for making actual zombie tokens we only have a number of cards that really make a difference. The main one here being Ghoulcaller Gisa. Even using her ability on a token itself can slowly split single zombies into two as the game goes on if you are struggling to find big creatures to sacrifice. However the benefit of having your Commander out with this means you can sacrifice something like Grave Titan for six zombie tokens, then re cast him with Gisa and Geralf’s ability, also creating 2 more zombies!

The deck has one or two neat plays which can help with forwarding your game plan. The best of being Rooftop Storm and Kindred Discovery/Vanquisher’s Banner. By having both of these out you can cast zombies from your hand for free, then draw a card from Discovery/Banner, then hopefully drawing more zombies to repeat! You can just keep slamming down zombies until you run out! if you manage to get both the Vanquisher’s Banner and Kindred Discovery down then you are drawing two cards per zombie instead! We also have Sidisi, Undead Vizier to help tutor up any cards you need. Since the tutor is on the creature she can be used multiple times as we can just cast her from the graveyard with our commander to fetch up more cards over the space of a few turns.

The deck can also have some decent ways to make tons of mana in the mid/late game using things like Cabal Coffers if you have lots of lands out with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth or Crypt of Agadeem if your graveyard is stocked up to help ramp up for those resurrection spells. Also having access to all this mana and having something like Empty the Pits in your hand can be a nice play.

If for some reason you and your unstoppable army of the undead cant beat down your way to victory then Gray Merchant of Asphodel should have you covered! Gary can easily finish games once you’ve built up a decent board state and can sometimes win you the game out of nowhere when you cast your resurrection spells whilst he’s in the graveyard.
