Modern Tournament – Coliseum Cards Tamworth

On 2nd March 2019 Saturday I made my way down to Tamworth for a day of magic. The last time I went to this shop it must have been a year ago, since then the shop has widely improved and is definitely worth a visit.

The Tournament was a Win A Booster Event which had 22 people who turned up to attend the event which was 4 rounds. I came up in the top 4! So this blog will be my matches and how well Breach did!

I will post my deck list below. I did end up taking UR Breach (Not Turns) which is the deck I have been playing with for 4 months at FNM’s.

  • 9x Island
  • 4x Misty Rainforest
  • 1x Mountain
  • 2x Steam Vents
  • 2x Sulfur Falls

Creature (8)

  • 4x Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
  • 4x Snapcaster Mage

Planeswalker (2)

  • 1x Jace, the Mind Sculptor

Sideboard (15)

  • 1x Abrade
  • 2x Anger of the Gods
  • 1x Ceremonious Rejection
  • 1x Dispel
  • 3x Madcap Experiment
  • 2x Negate
  • 1x Platinum Emperion
  • 1x Flame Slash
  • 1x Ral, Izzet Viceroy
  • 2x Surgical Extraction

Match 1
UR Breach vs Counters Company. 2-0. This was a very fast match, as both games consist of me having to kill everything to slow him down, to then just cast Through The Breach and slapping down Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. Both games went like this. Game 2 though was easier as I did have more removal spells after side-boarding.

Match 2
UR Breach vs Izzet Phoenix. 0-2. This was a long match, both game 1 & 2 proved that both these decks can go on forever (Go UR Decks). Game 1 was unfortunate for me, I drew three Through the Breaches and no Emrakul’s which was a shame as I would have been able to win that match. Though as the game went on longer in Game 1 I wasn’t able to get there and he was able to get his Phoenix’s back again and again. Game 2 was so much harder as counter spells came making it very awkward to kill any of his creatures, this started to feel like a tempo deck, plays a threat and just protects it. I did lose very fast in this match .

Match 3
UR Breach vs Hardened Scales Affinity . 2-1. Very similar to match 1 vs Counter Company just try to kill everything to then get Emrakul out. Though game 1 my opponent got mana screwed and then I got mana screwed in game 2, so really only game 3 was a real game. The Abrades were amazing in this match, Anger of the Gods helped and so did Ral, Izzet Viceroy who proved his worth in this deck and really showed how powerful he really was. At this moment I am sitting at 2-1 as my record.

Match 4
UR Breach vs U/G Stompy / Elephants? 2-1. Killing the mana dork feels so good when your opponent is trying so hard to ramp into something big. Picked off his mana creatures which then lead to a quick easy end in game 1. Though game two proved to really hard as Steel Leef Champion (which took me down) is four toughness and bolt doesn’t kill, but I had one Flame Slash in sideboard which was quickly brought in for game 3. I also did bring in Madcap Experiment & Platinum Emperion combo which lead to my opponent saying he has no answer for this and me quickly tapping down his team with Cryptic Command and swinging for 8 twice and throwing some spells at his faces lead to a quick finish for me.

So this was the end of swiss rounds and then it lead up into a top 4 where my match was vs Izzet Phoenix and the match kind of went the same as in Round 2, I did lose and just took fourth place which I got n Toolbox kit for (my packs were bad).

I had a really good day and would travel out there again for future modern events.
